Congratulations on registering your new domain name and let us, the staff behind the machines of Mister.net thank you and welcome you to probably one of the best-kept secrets on the Internet. Mister.net offers a powerful hosting package which most companies charge over $25 per month when we provide it FREE when you register your domain with us. Mister.net's hosting package is suited for small/medium businesses, organizations, personal, family and government sites all of which Mister.net currently hosts. Mister.net has now been in business for over seven years (incepted in 1997) and will continue to do what we do best which is providing free web hosting on our secure class A network and provide quick and helpful top tier customer support.

For beginners it might be a little overwhelming with all the features that we provide and how to take the full advantage of them. For the experienced and repeat customers this will serve as a good refresher how to get started with your site. This page will walk you through the main features of our complete hosting package and how to get started.

The main features are:

Administrative Web Hosting Console

The administrative web hosting console is the place you visit to manage and control all the features of your hosting account. This includes:
  • Email Accounts
  • Alias Accounts
  • Email Forwarding
  • Email Auto Responders
  • FrontPage Extensions
  • Spam Blocking
  • Password Protected Directories
  • Mailing Lists
  • Subdomains
  • Changing Users Passwords
  • Backup / Restore
  • (and much more)

Once you are able to login to the administrative console there is a built in help guide that can walk you through each feature. Here is what is required to login:
  • Visit: http://www.domain-name.com/admin/ (substitute your domain name in place of domain-name.com)
  • Login: admin
  • Domain: domain-name.com (substitute your domain name in place of domain-name.com)
  • Password: (your admin password sent in the welcome email)

If you have any problems logging in, please make sure you are using the login name 'admin', you put in your domain name and you are using the correct password. If you continue to have problems then most likely you will have to contact your system administrator, firewall or anti-virus software for them to allow you access to this secure console. One of those probably is blocking you access from this section.

Email

When you register a domain with Mister.net we provide you the ability to send and receive email through your domain name. This means you can start creating personalized email accounts for your domain. By default we create the user name 'admin' for your account. This user is the master account and already has email setup. To begin using this email account you need to have a pop3 email software such as Outlook, Outlook Express or Eudora. Once you are in these applications you will need to create a new pop3 email account. Each program has different steps to get to this point, so you will need to navigate to this section. Here are some quick links to get there:
  • Outlook Express 6 - Tools (from top menu bar), scroll down to Accounts, select the tab on the right that says Add, select Mail.
  • Outlook 2000 - Tools (from top menu bar), scroll down to Accounts, select the tab on the right that says Add, select Mail.
  • Eudora 5.0 - From the Tools menu, select Personalities, Right-click on the highlighted personality in the left-hand screen and select New, the New Account Wizard will appear, check the circle next to Create a brand new email account.

Once you are in the section to create a new email account you require the following information:
  • Email Account Type: POP3
  • Name: (type in what you want the receivers of your email to see when they get an email from you)
  • Email Address: admin@domain-name.com (substitute your domain name in place of domain-name.com)
  • Login: admin@domain-name.com (substitute your domain name in place of domain-name.com)
  • Password: (your admin password sent in the welcome email)
  • Incoming Mail Server: mail.domain-name.com (substitute your domain name in place of domain-name.com)
  • Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): Your ISP's outgoing mail server address.

When you are adding an email account no matter what the program is, the above information will guide you. You will have to plug the information into your software depending on what it is asking. The only confusing part may be the Outgoing Mail Server. Your ISP (internet service providers. how you connect to the internet) will serve as the party who actually sends the email out. This is useful because they have the correct protocols for sending email with the highest success of your email arriving to the intended party (mainly for Spam reasons). You will most likely have to lookup what this information is. Typically you can visit, Google.com and search for it. If you are using Verizon you can enter the search term 'Verizon Outgoing Mail Server SMTP'.

Here are the Outgoing Mail Server addresses for the most common ISP's:

AT&T Broadband    probably mail.attbi.com
AT&T Global    smtp1.attglobal.net
AT&T Worldnet    mailhost.att.net
Comcast    smtp.comcast.net
CompuServe    gsbims.uchicago.edu
Cox High Speed Internet    smtp.central.cox.net

Erols    smtp.starpower.net
Gateway    smtp.gateway.net
Juno    webmail.juno.com
Mindspring    mail.earthlink.net or smtp.earthlink.net

SBC Yahoo    smtp.sbcglobal.yahoo.com
Starpower    smtp.starpower.net

FTP

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is how you upload and download files to your account with Mister.net. Most likely you have or will have your website located on your personal computer. To link your site up with your domain name, so that the whole world wide web (www) can access your files you need to upload them to your account with Mister.net. The first item to understand with your account with Mister.net is the directory structure.

You have essentially two main places to place files:
  • Your public html directory where everyone can access your files
  • Your private home directory where only you can access these files

By default, when you login to your FTP account with Mister.net you are placed in the private directory which is located on the server at '/'. To access your public directory you need to move to the directory located on the server '/httpdocs/'.

One point to mention is that all files on our servers are case sensitive. This means the file called Pictures.html is different from pictures.html. Typically it is best to use all lowercase letters, but that choice is yours. You need to make sure you link your files correctly using the exact spelling of the file name.

Finally, when a visitor comes to your site by visiting: http://www.your-domain.com your account with Mister.net will automatically look for a file called index.html, index.htm or index.php. If you do not have one of those files in the directory '/httpdocs/' then your site will not show up. By default, when we create your account we place an index.html file along with some images in your public folder. Please feel free to delete them if you wish.

To connect to your FTP account with Mister.net your FTP program will require this information:
  • Host/Server Address: ftp.domain-name.com (substitute your domain name in place of domain-name.com)
  • Login: (your FTP user name sent in your welcome email)
  • Password: (your FTP password sent in your welcome email)
  • Port: 21
  • Server Directory: /httpdocs/

There are many FTP programs available on the internet, some free and some for a low price. Typically if you are a student or non-commercial site you can use one for free. Here are different FTP programs we recommend and where you can download them:

Domain Management Console

The domain management console typically does not need to be accessed frequently. This feature we provide allows you to manage your domain name. This mainly includes:
  • Domain Renewal
  • Account Information
  • Domain Password
  • Nameservers or DNS information
    • Making changes to your nameservers or DNS information can result in your site going offline if not done properly. Please make sure you know what you are doing and if not, just ask for help.

It is important to keep your email address on file in the domain management console updated because that is where the domain renewal notices go.

To login to your domain managament console visit:
